Israeli soldiers fired warning shots at a diplomatic delegation near the entrance of Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank on the 21st, sparking international condemnation. Countries such as France, Italy, and Portugal have summoned Israeli ambassadors to demand an explanation for the incident.
The delegation, consisting of diplomats from multiple countries, was reviewing the situation near the eastern entrance of Jenin refugee camp when soldiers stationed there fired warning shots at the crowd. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
Members of the delegation included diplomats from over 20 countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, France, China, Russia, and the European Union, as well as staff from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
United Nations Secretary-General Guterres' spokesperson Dujarric stated that the Israeli military's warning shots at the diplomats were "unacceptable."
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Borrell, also called on Israel to conduct an investigation and hold those responsible accountable.
Israeli Military Apology
The Israel Defense Forces later apologized for the incident, stating that the action did not result in any casualties.
In a statement, the military said, "The Israel Defense Forces deeply regret the inconvenience caused."
The military has ordered an investigation but also stated that the delegation deviated from the pre-approved route, prompting troops to fire warning shots to prevent the delegation from entering unauthorized areas.
