(Penang, 25th) Regarding the issue of U.S. tariff policies, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stated that the U.S. is one of Penang's largest trading partners and would be directly affected. Bank Negara needs an additional month to observe the impact of U.S. tariff policies in order to re-evaluate economic growth for this year and next year.
“Therefore, the Parliament which was initially scheduled for June has also been postponed by a month. The Parliament will also present the 13th Malaysia Plan to provide policy guidance for the nation's future development.”
He made these remarks at the 89th Anniversary and Filial Piety & Elder Respect Gala of the Penang Hui Pei Chuan Kang Association on Saturday (24th) evening, urging the public to cooperate with both the federal and state governments in addressing the challenges posed by the U.S. tariff policies.
He revealed that despite global challenges, Invest Penang recently reported that domestic and international investors remain optimistic about Penang’s position in the global semiconductor and electronics industry supply chain.
“Our country should actively explore diverse trade markets, including strengthening bilateral cooperation with advanced economies like Singapore and actively attracting foreign investment from technologically advanced countries like those in Europe to further enrich our economic ecosystem.”
He also mentioned that after the pandemic, activities of Chinese associations are gradually recovering, and only through unity and perseverance can they maintain their operations and attract new generations to join. Additionally, the youth group and women’s section play important roles in giving traditional culture new life in the modern era.
Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying urged everyone not to wait until the last minute to start preparing electronic invoices to enhance business management efficiency.
“Our country is rapidly developing into a key hub for regional data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Both the U.S. and China are investing in technology projects in our country, hence we will not become a 'gray bridge' in the major powers’ competition nor be drawn into confrontational camps. Instead, we will continue to play the role of a 'bridge nation.'”
That evening also featured a swearing-in ceremony for the committees, alongside the presentation of scholarships to members' children. Attendees included Association Advisor Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, Deputy Chairman Dato' Teoh Eng Hong, and Scholarship Director Chong Chu Lan, among others.
