(Kota Samarahan, 22nd) Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has pledged to further enhance campus safety measures and provide appropriate assistance to the families of victims involved in the tragic accident at the university lake yesterday.
The accident involved a vehicle that lost control, veered off the road, and plunged into the campus lake, carrying a mother and daughter inside.
According to a statement by the university’s Corporate Communications Office, UNIMAS security personnel, with the help of the public nearby, swiftly rescued the mother and daughter from the vehicle at the time of the incident.
The rescue operation was conducted in coordination with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), and Civil Defence Force (APM).
Both victims were sent to the UNIMAS Health Centre (PKU) for treatment. The daughter's condition is stable, but unfortunately the mother was later pronounced dead; her remains have been sent to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).
“UNIMAS extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and calls on all parties to respect their privacy.”
“The university will continue to provide necessary support and assistance during this difficult period,” the statement read.
UNIMAS also expressed gratitude to staff and campus members who responded swiftly and bravely during the rescue operation.
“Their rapid and courageous actions fully reflect UNIMAS’s core values—caring, resilience, volunteerism, and commitment to the common good,” the statement added.
