[Singapore General Election] People’s Action Party Wins Overwhelming Victory Lawrence Wong: Will Form Cabinet to Build the Strongest Team

(Singapore, May 4) – The results of Singapore’s general election were announced in the early hours of May 4. The People’s Action Party (PAP) not only secured more than half the seats but also achieved a significant lead over opposition parties, including the Workers’ Party, with a higher vote share than in the previous election.

PAP Secretary-General and current Prime Minister Lawrence Wong assumed the role of secretary-general in 2024, succeeding Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, marking the completion of the leadership transition from the third to the fourth generation within the PAP. This was Wong’s first general election as PAP secretary-general.

At around 3 a.m., Lawrence Wong held a press conference, stating that many people had closely followed the election, and the international community had also taken note of the results. "This is a clear signal of trust, stability, and confidence in the government," he said.

In this election, the PAP won in most constituencies, retaining its position as the ruling party. The PAP achieved a vote share of 65.57%, higher than the 61.24% in the 2020 election. Out of the 97 parliamentary seats, the PAP secured 87, while the Workers’ Party won 10.

A total of 2,429,281 voters participated in this election, representing approximately 92.47% of all eligible voters.

When Lawrence Wong, Lee Hsien Loong, and others took the stage to deliver their speeches, supporters erupted into thunderous applause and cheers.

In his speech, Lawrence Wong stated that with the election concluded, his immediate priority is to form a cabinet and build the strongest possible team, with the list of cabinet members to be announced at an appropriate time.

Previously, Wong repeatedly urged voters to grant him a strong mandate to help Singapore, heavily reliant on trade, navigate economic uncertainties amid U.S. tariff measures.

● Workers’ Party Fields Strong Candidates

Prime Minister Wong acknowledged that the opposition, particularly the Workers’ Party, fielded a strong slate of candidates in this election. Among them were many young individuals eager to contribute and serve.

He noted that the Workers’ Party won 10 seats and gained two Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) seats. If the NCMPs accept their roles, the Workers’ Party will hold a total of 12 seats in Parliament, an increase from their previous tally.

"This will give them stronger representation in Parliament and an opportunity to refresh their lineup of MPs," Wong said.

He emphasized that he respects the opposition’s representation in Parliament and looks forward to their contributions. "I have always taken their suggestions and perspectives seriously and will continue to do so."

He added, "Parliament is a place to discuss critical national issues. I believe we will have constructive and in-depth debates. On certain topics, we may have to agree to disagree. At the same time, on major national issues, we must bear shared responsibility, unite, and work together to advance Singapore in this unpredictable and turbulent world."
