(Bandar Seri Begawan, 28th) The Brunei delegation participated in a seminar on crimes of human trafficking held in Malaysia from April 23 to 24 this year.

The main focus of the ASEAN seminar was to strengthen the cross-border investigation cooperation under the leadership of the head of the expert group on anti-trafficking units (HSU) process mechanisms.

This seminar is one of the initiatives under the multi-year ASEAN work plan from 2024 to 2028. The transnational crime meeting (SOMTC) confirmed by the ASEAN senior officials' referendum, set to be held on August 12, 2024, aims to strengthen cooperation among ASEAN member states to address issues, making it key to combating human trafficking in the region.

The seminar was attended by representatives from the Brunei Royal Police's Human Trafficking Investigation Crime Unit, the Prime Minister's Office Security and Legal Judicial Department, and the Immigration and National Registration Department.

The purpose of this seminar is to enhance cross-border investigative cooperation among law enforcement agencies. Additionally, it aims to strengthen the operational processes of the HSU's scope, updating bilateral and regional cross-border investigation procedures within the HSU process mechanism. This plan aims to enhance ASEAN's collective fight against human trafficking, committed to protecting vulnerable groups.

A total of 33 participants from 11 ASEAN countries, along with East Timor as an observer, attended the two-day seminar.

During the meeting, Brunei representatives shared information with a speech titled “Transnational Human Trafficking Cases,” including information on the identification of human trafficking.
