The Last Unmarried '85 Beauties Join the Marriage Wave—Overwhelming Pressure Prompts Agency to Warn Media

The new year has just begun, and Japan’s entertainment industry is already filled with joyful news. In less than ten days since the start of 2026, four celebrity couples have successively announced their marriage, described by outsiders as a “New Year wedding wave.”

The newlyweds include Masami Nagasawa and film director Takeshi Fukunaga; Ayumi Ito and actor Hosoya Yusuke, who is 14 years her junior; Jurina Matsui and Tatsunori Tsujimoto, a member of the boy group “BOYS AND MEN” and an actor, as well as Kanata Hongo and his non-celebrity girlfriend. News of these sequential marriages within just a few days has led fans to exclaim, “The New Year atmosphere feels especially happy.”

Masami Nagasawa holds a prominent position in Japan’s entertainment sphere and is hailed as a “national goddess,” representing both popularity and talent. She is notably recognized for her lead role in the film “Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World.” Beyond her signature pure smile and beauty, she is also a grand slam winner at the Japan Academy Film Prize as Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Newcomer, becoming the youngest actress in history to do so in Japan.

Her sudden marriage announcement left fans in shock, with many media outlets rushing to seek interviews, which caused her considerable stress. Her management released a stern statement: “She is enduring a tremendous mental burden and fear.”

Upon Masami Nagasawa’s marriage announcement, in addition to the shock and warm wishes, there was also a sentiment that the goddess ultimately did not marry a handsome man. Along with Maki Horikita, Yui Aragaki, and Erika Toda, Nagasawa is one of the four major actresses born in the late 1980s. As they’ve grown older, all have now tied the knot.
The first to marry was Maki Horikita, who had a whirlwind wedding in 2015 with fellow actor Koji Yamamoto. She then completely withdrew from showbiz and is now a mother of two sons, living a very low-key life.

“Death Note” star Erika Toda married actor Tori Matsuzaka in 2020; they are a good-looking couple and now have a son. Toda has continued acting.

In 2021, Yui Aragaki married actor Gen Hoshino. Their differing levels of fame and looks surprised the public. While rumors of marital problems have surfaced, they remain together. They haven’t disclosed whether they have children, rarely appear in public together, and are very protective of their private life.

Except for Erika Toda, these goddesses’ partners are not all heartthrobs. While some people lament this, many agree that as long as they’re well-matched, happiness is what matters most.
