KUCHING: A long-awaited road project connecting Nanga Serau, Song to Nanga Seranau, Kapit will finally materialise under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), offering renewed hope for hundreds of rural families in the Kapit division.
The project, which is part of a federal initiative to build and upgrade 2,800km of rural roads across the country between 2026 and 2030, was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the 13MP tabling in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Jul 31)
Kapit MP Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi described the announcement as a long-overdue but highly welcomed development for the people in the region.
“With the completion of this road, areas on the upper left bank of the Batang Rajang particularly from the bridge to be built near Nanga Yong – will finally be connected by land directly to Kapit town,” he said this in his Facebook post
He noted that for many years, residents, especially those from the longhouse communities, had to rely on river transport to commute.
“This became even more difficult after express boat services were discontinued following the completion of the Sibu-Kapit road.
“As the MP for Kapit, I fully understand the hardship endured by the local communities.
“This project not only brings new hope but also strengthens our resolve to push for more inclusive development in Sarawak’s interior,” he added.
Nanta also extended his appreciation to the Prime Minister and the federal government for prioritising rural connectivity, saying it reflects their commitment to ensuring the voices of the rural population are not left out of the national development agenda.
“This announcement is proof that the needs of those in the interior continue to receive attention,” he said.
