Indonesian Man Arrested for Concealing Contraband Cigarettes, Fined Over Ten Thousand Unable to Pay

(Bandar Seri Begawan, 11th) An Indonesian man was arrested in Kuala Belait by law enforcement officers recently for illegally possessing contraband cigarettes, and was fined $16,510 by the court. As he is unable to pay the fine, he will serve a 13-month jail sentence.

The defendant, Jubakin, pleaded guilty at the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate’s Court, and was charged with possessing 16 cartons, 5 packs, and 1 stick of cigarettes without legal permission, in violation of Section 146(1)(d) of the Excise Order 2006.

The man was arrested this Tuesday at a workers' dormitory on Jalan Ayer Lant, Mukim Liang, Kuala Belait during a joint operation by the Immigration & National Registration Department Kuala Belait branch, Customs Department, and other enforcement agencies.

After the court's verdict, it also ordered the confiscated contraband cigarettes to be forfeited and handled by the government.
