On the evening of July 31, Myanmar's Defense and Security Council issued an order announcing the imposition of a state of emergency in 63 townships across 3 regions and 6 states.
In a subsequent order, the council stated that, in accordance with relevant constitutional provisions, military administration would be implemented in the aforementioned areas for 90 days starting from that day.
In February 2021, then-acting President Myint Swe declared a one-year nationwide state of emergency and transferred national power to the Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services. The Commander-in-Chief’s office subsequently established a State Administration Council, with Min Aung Hlaing serving as chairman. Myanmar has since extended the nationwide state of emergency multiple times.
On the afternoon of July 31, Myanmar Radio and Television reported that the Defense and Security Council announced the dissolution of the State Administration Council after a meeting in Naypyidaw on the same day. The Defense and Security Council also decided to end the nationwide state of emergency starting from August 1 in preparation for elections.
The nationwide state of emergency in Myanmar lasted for four and a half years.
