Bangladesh Elections on February 12: First Since Hasina’s Resignation

Published at Dec 12, 2025 04:25 pm
Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner Nasir announced on the evening of the 11th that the country is scheduled to hold its 13th National Parliament elections on February 12, 2026.

This election will be the first since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned.

In August 2024, Hasina was overthrown, ending her 15-year-long rule. Since then, Bangladesh has remained in political turmoil. Her former ruling party, the Awami League, has been banned from participating in the election.

On November 17 of this year, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal ruled that Hasina had committed crimes during the nationwide protests in 2024 and sentenced her to death in absentia.

In August 2024, nationwide protests erupted in Bangladesh. On the 5th of that month, Hasina resigned; on the 6th, the National Parliament was dissolved.

Bangladesh’s National Parliament is a unicameral legislature, consisting of 350 members. Of these, 300 are directly elected by voters and 50 seats for female members are allocated. The term of office is five years.

According to the schedule, the deadline for candidate nominations is December 29 of this year, with the review process taking place from December 30 of this year to January 4 of next year. The final candidate list will be announced on January 21 of next year. Nearly 128 million voters are eligible to participate in the vote.
