Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said pointed out that the proposal to limit the Prime Minister's term to two terms and the formulation of a political donation law are still in the research stage and in discussions with various political parties.
She said that if these two proposals are eventually implemented, they will also apply to all states nationwide.
She mentioned this to reporters today when attending the Prime Minister's Department Legal Affairs Unit Hari Raya tea event, which was also attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar.
In March this year, Anwar agreed with the reform agenda, including amending the Federal Constitution to limit the Prime Minister's term to 10 years, emphasizing that the process must be rigorous and must gain the consensus of all political parties and the support of two-thirds of Members of Parliament.
Azalina stated that the department has also engaged with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the Electoral Commission on the political donation law.
"Institutions like the Anti-Corruption Commission and the Electoral Commission do indeed encourage (the formulation of) a political donation (law), but what form will it take?
"We must study many aspects, including the amount, the concept of donations, definitions, applications, whether donations are to individuals or parties."
She stated that the department has also met with party representatives, receiving positive feedback so far.
"We have met, but we give them some time to express their views in writing.
"As a government of prosperity, I am very democratic, and everything we do must obtain views from NGOs, civil society, universities, and relevant stakeholders."
