Increase Funding for Lubok Antu River Cleanup to Strengthen Sustainable Water Management

(Sungai Stambong, 13th) — It is recommended to allocate an additional RM1 million for the cleaning and maintenance of the Lubok Antu River, which is expected to further strengthen the sustainable management of water resources in the area.
Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof stated that with the additional allocation, the total amount will increase from the originally requested RM1.5 million to RM2.5 million.
He said: “At first, I thought RM1.5 million would be sufficient, but after reviewing, it was found that another RM1 million is still needed. Therefore, I agreed to push forward with this river cleanup and maintenance work, as it is a collective responsibility.”

“Water sources come from rivers—it is our responsibility to ensure this resource is well protected. Without proper maintenance, pollution will occur and ultimately affect our lives.”
He said this during his speech at the Sarawak regional team’s PETRA (Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation) corporate social responsibility event and luncheon yesterday after visiting the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Power Station.
He pointed out that in the current global landscape, the control of water resources and energy has become an important factor in ensuring economic growth and the well-being of the people.

On the other hand, Fadillah noted that Sarawak has an advantage in energy, with approximately 60% to 70% of its electricity coming from hydropower, though alternative sources still need to be explored.
He said: “Without these water resources, with rising diesel and gas prices and the unstable supply caused by global conflicts, Sarawak would also be affected.”
“Fortunately, about 60% to 70% of Sarawak’s energy currently comes from hydropower, diesel usage has gradually decreased, and it is expected to be completely phased out in the near future.”
Earlier, Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, Sarawak’s Deputy Minister of International Trade, Industry, and Investment, urged the proper use of the related allocation to ensure that the river continues to serve as a vital life resource for rural communities.
