(Philippines, 15th) — A “romantic encounter” initiated via a dating app turned into a meticulously planned “honey trap” extortion case. Philippine police recently reported that a Chinese national in Quezon City, the capital region, was blackmailed with secretly recorded intimate footage after agreeing to meet a net friend. Police responded swiftly with a sting operation, successfully apprehending all four transgender individuals involved.

According to Sing Tao Daily, citing local police, the victim was a 23-year-old Chinese man surnamed Zhou. The case details state that on February 21, Zhou met the suspect, who used the alias “Joel,” through the dating app Tinder and accepted an invitation to the suspect’s rented apartment.

While inside the apartment, Zhou engaged in intimate activity with the suspect, unaware that the entire process was being surreptitiously recorded by hidden equipment. Afterwards, the suspect's demeanor changed and they revealed the footage, threatening to make it public unless Zhou paid 80,000 pesos (5,288 ringgit). Fearing exposure and for his privacy, Zhou initially complied with the payment.

However, the suspect, emboldened by success, did not let the matter rest and attempted to extort even more money from Zhou.

Unable to endure further, Zhou decided to seek police assistance. Philippine police took the case very seriously and, after investigation, planned a sting operation. On the evening of February 23, police acted outside a convenience store in Quezon City, arresting all four suspects as they came to collect the ransom.

Police revealed that the four apprehended suspects were aged between 18 and 21, all transgender individuals who usually reside in Pasay City.

Currently, the four suspects have been transferred to the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office and will face robbery (extortion) charges. Police also emphasized that blackmailing with private images is a serious criminal offense and reminded the public to remain vigilant when using dating apps, never to easily disclose personal privacy, in order to avoid falling into traps set by criminals.
