KUCHING,9 July: Sarawak Women’s Day 2025 (HW25) will be celebrated on Aug 2, with this year’s theme focusing on “Diversity, Equality, Equity and Inclusivity” (D2EI).
The celebration, which will recognise women’s contributions across multiple sectors, will be held for the first time at the Dewan Santapan, Level 1, Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Building.
Women, Children and Community Well-being Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, said the move to hold the event at the State Assembly building was symbolic and timely.
“This is the first time we’re using Dewan Santapan for this celebration.
“It’s a meaningful space, and we thank the Sarawak Legislative Assembly for allowing us to host Women’s Day there,” she said during a press conference at Wisma Wanita on Tuesday (July 8).
Fatimah said the decision to adopt the D2EI theme reflects the ministry’s commitment to recognising the value of all women, regardless of their background, identity or ability.
“The theme this year, Diversity, Equality, Equity and Inclusivity, highlights the importance of embracing women from all walks of life. We want everyone to feel seen, heard and celebrated,” she said.
The event will begin at 8:30am and will also be live-streamed via the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) Facebook page, allowing broader participation across the state.
Fatimah said the celebration is not just a formality, but a platform to honour women who have made significant contributions to Sarawak’s development, especially in empowering families and communities.
“We are here to celebrate Sarawakian women’s role in building the state and strengthening their own lives and families.
“Their success deserves to be recognised,” she added.
Among the highlights of the programme will be the presentation of the Premier of Sarawak’s Women’s Day Awards, namely, the Women’s Leadership Award, the Women’s Entrepreneurship Award, the Women’s Social Activism Award, the Special Achievement Award, the Outstanding NGO Award and the Young Women Leader Award.
Additionally, Fatimah announced the introduction of a new Special Award this year, in line with the D2EI theme.
The award will go to an institution or organisation that exemplifies gender-friendly practices.
“This year, we are introducing a special award to honour a gender-friendly organisation.
“Only one organisation will be selected, and this reflects our commitment to inclusivity in both public and private spheres,” she said.
The physical event will be attended by around 800 guests, including Cabinet Members, MPs, ADUNs, government officials, NGOs, and members of the Sarawak Women and Family Council.
To ensure inclusivity, women from all 45 districts across Sarawak will join virtually via Zoom, with a small allocation provided to support local participation and simultaneous district-level Women’s Day activities.
“Women’s Day is a celebration we all look forward to. It’s a moment of pride and unity for Sarawakian women, and a reminder of how far we’ve come, and how much further we can go together,” said Fatimah.
