Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior released the latest population statistics on the 10th, showing that as of the end of August, the total population in Taiwan was 23,328,343, a decrease of 9,593 people compared to July. The population has experienced negative growth for 20 consecutive months, reflecting the trend of "fewer births, fewer people moving in, and an increase in the elderly population."
● Only 8,433 Births in May, Setting a New Record Low
According to the statistics, there were 8,464 births across Taiwan in August, with a birth rate of 4.27 per thousand. This is 3,179 fewer than the same period last year and 475 fewer than in July. Overall, there were 72,000 newborns in the first eight months of this year, compared to 86,000 in the first eight months of last year—a decrease of more than 13,000. Notably, the number of births in May this year was only 8,433, marking a new record low.
As for the number of deaths, there were 15,000 deaths in August, 1,604 fewer than the same period last year and 1,620 fewer than in July. Regarding population migration, the number of people moving into Taiwan in August was 79,243, while the number moving out was 82,074, resulting in a net migration of -2,831 people.
