Philippine Vice President’s Funds Rejected, Audit Commission Urges Accountability and Anti-Corruption

The Philippine presidential office stated that the Commission on Audit (COA) upheld its decision to disallow approximately 73 million pesos of confidential funds from the Office of the Vice President (OVP) in 2022, highlighting the government’s ongoing commitment to fiscal accountability and anti-corruption efforts.

Presidential spokesperson Claire Castro pointed out that this ruling essentially refuted the vice president’s previous assertions regarding the transparency and proper management of the funds.

She stated that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has consistently emphasized the importance of building a clean government, and supports oversight agencies in taking swift action to ensure any violator is dealt with promptly.

It is reported that the Commission on Audit has issued a notice of disallowance for about 73.287 million pesos in confidential expenditures by the Office of the Vice President between December 21 and 31, 2022, which includes around 69.787 million pesos in bonuses and 3.5 million pesos in equipment procurement costs.

The relevant decision requires the Office of the Vice President to return the disallowed funds.

The presidential office also stressed that oversight bodies, including the Commission on Audit and the Anti-Money Laundering Council, play a key role in strengthening the government’s financial transparency and accountability.
