Thailand’s 2026 Songkran Festival Sees 242 Road Accident Fatalities Over 7 Days

During the seven days surrounding Thailand’s 2026 Songkran Festival from April 13th to 15th, authorities reported a total of 1,242 traffic accidents, resulting in 242 deaths and 1,200 injuries.

On the 17th, Thailand’s Road Safety Center released the above data covering April 10th to 16th. Although the casualty figures remain regrettable, compared to the average statistics of the past three years, the number of deaths has significantly decreased by 9.7%, and the overall accident rate has dropped by about 35.59%.

Phrae Province in northern Thailand became the accident hotspot, with a total of 48 accidents and the highest number of injuries nationwide (50). The capital Bangkok suffered the most serious loss of life, with 21 people tragically killed.

Data analysis indicates that speeding (40.65%) and tailgating/overtaking at close distances (25.20%) are the main causes of the accidents; in terms of vehicle type, motorcycle incidents are the highest, accounting for as much as 64.55%.

During the period from April 11th to 17th last year, there were 1,538 reported road traffic accidents, with 1,495 injured and 253 deaths. In the same period in 2024, there were 2,044 traffic accidents, 287 deaths, and 2,060 injuries.
