(Bandar Seri Begawan, 21st) The Labour Department's Kuala Belait Enforcement Division conducted enforcement operations code-named Usai 166/2026 and Usai 167/2026 in the Seria area on July 11, discovering two employers suspected of violating multiple provisions of the Employment Order (Chapter 278).
This operation aims to strengthen labour law enforcement, ensure employers fulfill their responsibilities according to law, and safeguard employees' rights.
The Labour Department stated that during the initial inspection of a restaurant, officers found the restaurant involved in five violations of the Employment Order, including failure to pay employees' wages and overtime, not providing rest time, overworking employees, failure to grant statutory holiday leave, and breaching terms of the foreign workers recruitment permit—resulting in foreign workers working for unauthorized employers.
Meanwhile, during inspection of a security post, officers found the employer involved in four offences, including stipulating illegal employment contract terms, failing to pay employees' wages and overtime, unauthorized deduction of employees' salaries, and scheduling employees to work beyond the permitted hours.
The Labour Department indicated that further investigation will be carried out regarding these violations. If found guilty, the employers could face a fine of up to $1,000 for each offence. Failure to pay fines will result in prosecution in court.
The Labour Department reminds all employers to strictly comply with the provisions of the Employment Order (Chapter 278) to ensure the welfare of employees, including timely payment of salaries, provision of statutory holiday leave, approval of medically certified sick leave, protection of annual leave rights, and provision of return air tickets for employees whose contract term has ended.
