Ma Shaofeng: Encouraging Students to Seize Opportunities to Further Studies in Singapore

(Borneo Bulletin, Bandar Seri Begawan, 24th) – Singapore High Commissioner to Brunei, Ma Shaofeng, stated that education should focus on future development, and scholarships serve as important opportunities for students to continue their studies.

He made these remarks at an educational exchange event co-organized by the Ministry of Education of Brunei and the Ministry of Education of Singapore, held at the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Islamic Exhibition Gallery. The purpose of this event was to provide students, parents, and principals from across the nation with a deeper understanding of the Brunei-Singapore Youth Education Scholarship (BS-YES) and educational opportunities in Singapore.

Ma Shaofeng encouraged future scholarship recipients to bravely seize the opportunity to receive an education in Singapore. He emphasized that studying in Singapore will offer students fresh and valuable experiences for growth, and help better prepare them for the future.

He also particularly stressed that BS-YES scholarship recipients play a key role in promoting and strengthening the unique bilateral relationship between Brunei and Singapore.

On the same day, principals from three partner Singaporean schools—Zhuo Tiancai (Principal of Dunman High School), Fu Shihui (Principal of Ngee Ann Secondary School), and Liu Junming (Principal of Victoria School)—also shared the curriculum arrangements, extra-curricular activities, and daily support systems their schools provide for BS-YES students.

This seminar was specially designed for Year 6 and Year 8 Bruneian students who have been shortlisted for the BS-YES programme. Shortlisted candidates will undergo further assessment through a selection examination jointly organized by the Ministries of Education of Singapore and Brunei.

Successful candidates will head to Singapore at the end of this year to begin their secondary school education journey.

The BS-YES scholarship, established in 2022, aims to select Bruneian students with outstanding academic performance to study Secondary 1 or Secondary 3 in Singapore. To date, 10 Bruneian students have received this scholarship.
