SIBU,8: Education fairs serve as a platform for students, particularly SPM candidates and school leavers, to explore opportunities for further studies.

Bukit Assek Assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, who is also chairman of the Sibu Methodist Schools Alumni Association, encouraged students to be curious and open to discovering the wide range of courses offered by universities and colleges.

“You need to be curious, explore more courses, discover more options and understand what’s out there. You will be surprised by the variety available,” he said.

He said this when met at the SMK Methodist Education Fair today, which featured 33 booths from various higher learning institutions.

The annual event is organised by the school’s Parents and Teachers Association (PIBG).

Chieng also highlighted that starting 2026, the state government will offer free education for selected courses at Sarawak-owned universities therefore participating in the education fair will enable the students to obtain more information on the initiative.
Meanwhile, in his speech, Chieng said education is more than just academic success, it is about equipping oneself to contribute meaningfully to society.

“Together, alumni, school and community, let us continue building a future where every Methodist student has the tools, confidence and opportunity to shine,” he said.

He also extended his gratitude to all parties that worked together in ensuring the success of the annual programme.
