(Miri, 21st) — A video of a man secretly filming a woman in the restroom of a restaurant in Bakanu has recently circulated widely on social media. Miri police have confirmed that they received a related report and successfully arrested the suspect on the same day of the incident.
Miri District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Lee Bing Qiang stated that at around 10 am on June 20, police received a report from a woman claiming that when she was using the restroom at a restaurant in Bakanu, a man used his mobile phone to secretly record her.
Police investigations showed that the suspect used his mobile phone to film the female victim while she was in the restroom. The act was noticed by the victim on the spot, who then went to the Bakanu Police Station to file a report.
After receiving the report, police immediately launched an investigation and successfully arrested a 19-year-old local male in the Bakanu area at around 11:30 am that same day. The suspect works as a lorry attendant, and the police also seized the suspected mobile phone used to record the victim as evidence.
Preliminary investigations found that the suspect has no prior criminal record.
Currently, police are investigating the case under Section 377D of the Penal Code (gross indecency). Once convicted, the offender can be sentenced to a maximum imprisonment of two years.
Assistant Commissioner Lee Bing Qiang emphasized that the police will not compromise on any criminal behavior and will ensure that the arrested suspect is prosecuted in court in accordance with national law, so that the court can make a decision to safeguard social security and public order.
He said the police will continue to crack down rigorously on any illegal activities that endanger public safety and invade others' privacy, in order to protect the rights and interests of the public from infringement.
