(Cotabato, 4th) – A shooting incident occurred in Lanao del Sur province, Philippines, this morning. A 24-year-old teacher was ambushed and killed by an unidentified gunman on his way to school, drawing strong concern from the education sector and broader society.
According to a report received by the Bangsamoro Regional Police, the deceased was Danilo Baba, a teacher at Balabagan Technical School and a native of Trento City, Agusan del Sur. The incident took place at around 8 a.m. when Baba was walking to the campus located in Nalal village and was shot at close range in the head by a lone gunman, dying on the spot.
The incident shocked the local education community. Mohagher Iqbal, Minister of the Bangsamoro Ministry of Basic, Higher, and Technical Education, promptly released a statement strongly condemning this act of violence.
"We are deeply saddened and strongly condemn this inhumane shooting incident," Iqbal said. "Teachers are pillars of society, and their safety should be protected."
He called on local law enforcement to do their utmost to investigate the case and promptly bring the perpetrator to justice, so as to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
Rubina Ming Bandas Macabunar, Superintendent of the Lanao del Sur II Schools Division, also issued a statement, describing this brutal killing of a dedicated community educator as "outrageous and heartbreaking."
She urged the relevant authorities to launch a thorough investigation and hold all those involved accountable, in order to bring justice to the deceased.
As of now, police have not yet identified the gunman, and the investigation is ongoing.
