Artist Namewee, who had earlier been cleared of drug use charges, faced two charges in court on Monday (Jan 19) regarding his drug possession case. The prosecution not only altered the original charge of possessing Ecstasy to possessing methamphetamine but also added a new charge of illegal possession of controlled erectile medication.
Wearing his signature beanie, dark glasses, and a black-and-white striped shirt, Namewee arrived at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate's Court at 9 a.m. on Monday (19th), accompanied by lawyer Zheng Qingfeng for the court proceeding on the drug possession case. Despite nodding to the media several times, he remained silent throughout.
According to Deputy Public Prosecutor Nuraini, the prosecution amended the charge after receiving the toxicology report, changing the original charge from the accused possessing 5.12 grams of suspected Ecstasy to possession of 1.57 grams of methamphetamine.
According to the amended charge, the accused Namewee allegedly committed the offense at about 4:30 p.m. on October 22 last year in a hotel room on Conlay Road, Kuala Lumpur, in violation of Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 (possession of drugs). If convicted, he may be fined up to RM100,000, or jailed for up to 5 years, or both.
Additionally, the prosecution has brought a new charge against the accused, namely that at the same time and place, he possessed 0.78 grams of the controlled prescription drug Sildenafil (commonly known as 'Viagra'), thus breaching Section 9(1) of the Poisons Act 1952.
If convicted, he could be fined up to RM50,000, or jailed for up to 5 years, or both.
Due to the new charge, Magistrate Atikah adjourned the case to March 5 for mention.
Namewee left the court around 9:30 a.m. later that morning, also without comment, refusing to comment on the case.
According to reports, a drug use charge against Namewee in December last year was eventually withdrawn by the prosecution due to a negative result on the drug test.
In addition, these two cases are linked to the suspicious death of Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Youxin. At the end of October last year, Hsieh, who had come to Malaysia, was found dead in a Kuala Lumpur hotel room. Namewee was implicated and summoned by the police to assist with the investigation. His detention was extended by six days before he was released on bail.
