Due to the severe flooding in Hat Yai, Thailand, 38 Malaysian university students and lecturers who were stranded locally have been successfully evacuated in a joint rescue operation coordinated by the Malaysian and Thai authorities.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release today that authorities launched a large-scale rescue operation, with assistance from the Thai military, to evacuate the stranded Malaysian citizens on Thursday morning from 8 am to 1 pm.
"With the decrease in rainfall, the flood waters yesterday (November 27, 2025) have receded significantly, allowing heavy vehicles to enter most areas. However, water levels in several locations remain high."
The Ministry noted that overall, approximately 1,459 Malaysian citizens were evacuated from more than 25 hotels yesterday and safely transferred to the Bukit Kayu Hitam border checkpoint.
It stated that fewer than 300 Malaysian citizens are currently still stranded in several areas. Two of the hotels identified by authorities remain inaccessible due to high water levels, and rescue efforts will continue today until everyone is properly relocated.
The Ministry hopes today's operations will complete the remaining evacuations but also emphasized that actions will continue until all affected Malaysian citizens are safely rescued.
The Ministry once again calls for any Malaysian citizens who have not reported their whereabouts or remain unaccounted for to promptly contact the Consulate General in Songkhla or the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok so assistance can be provided in a timely manner.
