Russia: Ukrainian Forces Violate Ceasefire Agreement, Attack Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

Published at Jun 06, 2026 02:58 pm
Rosatom CEO Likhachev told local media that on the 5th, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a drone attack on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, injuring three engineers and five Russian servicemen.

He said that the first attack by Ukrainian forces occurred at 12:15 pm Moscow time, targeting Rosatom experts conducting emergency repairs at the plant. The second attack happened at 1:15 pm, when Ukrainian forces used a drone to drop ammunition on a Russian Ministry of Defense demining team.

At around 8:00 am on the 5th, the International Atomic Energy Agency posted on social media that the locally brokered ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant front line had come into effect that day. The temporary ceasefire aims to repair critical power lines at the plant and prevent nuclear accidents.

The Russian Ministry of Defense pointed out that the Ukrainian attack on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant occurred within the first few hours after the ceasefire agreement took effect.

Likhachev said that Ukraine's intensive daily air strikes posed a real, not just a potential, threat to nuclear safety across Europe. Russia has called on the International Atomic Energy Agency to pay attention to Ukraine's violation of the ceasefire agreement, and will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of civilians.
