Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar pointed out that in the face of intensifying geopolitical and trade tensions, ASEAN needs to ensure closer alignment between its diplomatic and economic policy tracks in order to strengthen regional cohesion.
He said that the foreign ministers and economic ministers of ASEAN countries must work together to address these challenges, emphasizing that such synergy is crucial to transform ASEAN unity into tangible outcomes.
“Tools traditionally used to promote growth in trade and investment are now increasingly being used as instruments of political pressure, dividing global cooperation.
“This trend is not a flash in the pan, but rather the new normal of our era.”
He made these remarks in his opening speech at the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) today.
Anwar mentioned that power has always shaped trade, but now it has increasingly become the dominant factor determining the direction of trade. Widespread tariffs, export restrictions, and investment barriers have become tools of geopolitical competition.
Therefore, he urged that ASEAN must face reality with clarity and firm conviction, ensuring that ASEAN's unity is reflected not only in declarations, but also in its institutions, strategies, and decision-making.
