U.S. President Trump stated that Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to stop their border conflict and thanked our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar for his assistance.
On Friday (December 13), he posted on Truth Social, stating that he had productive calls with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin.
"They have agreed to a comprehensive ceasefire starting this evening and to return to the peace agreement I initially reached with them, with the help of Malaysia’s distinguished Prime Minister Anwar."
"I am honored to work with Anutin and Hun Manet to resolve an issue that could have sparked a major war between these two originally beautiful and prosperous countries! I also want to thank Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar for his assistance in this extremely important matter."
Trump added that the two countries are ready to achieve peace and to continue developing trade with the United States.
On the other hand, Anwar earlier indicated that he had a call with Trump to discuss the Thailand-Cambodia conflict.
He posted on Facebook: "Regarding the heightened tensions on the Thailand-Cambodia border, I explained Malaysia’s role in urging both parties to exercise restraint and to return to the negotiating table through dialogue, bilateral mechanisms, and ASEAN formats."
He pointed out that, as the rotating chair of ASEAN, Malaysia will soon convene a special ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting to assess the situation and support measures to ease regional tensions.
The longstanding Thailand-Cambodia border dispute erupted again in July this year into five days of armed clashes.
The two countries subsequently reached a ceasefire agreement in Kuala Lumpur on July 24, and at the 47th ASEAN Summit held on October 26, signed the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement jointly witnessed by Anwar and Trump.
However, renewed clashes have recently occurred, causing several deaths and displacing tens of thousands.
