Uruguayan President Lacalle Pou arrived in Beijing on the 1st, starting a week-long state visit to China. Lacalle Pou is also the first Latin American leader to visit China since the U.S., on January 3, launched a military operation to capture Venezuelan President Maduro. The focus is on whether China will make any statements regarding the status of Latin American countries and the tough stance taken by the U.S.
Xi Jinping pointed out that in the 38 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Uruguay, both sides have always adhered to mutual respect and win-win cooperation. Under new circumstances, both sides should inherit this tradition, deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership, and let the tree of friendship between the two countries grow stronger and more prosperous.
Xi Jinping emphasized that the two countries should continue to firmly support each other's core interests and major concerns, and continuously deepen strategic mutual trust. Both sides should strengthen the alignment of their development strategies, deepen cooperation in trade, finance and other fields, tap the potential of emerging sectors, and promote economic growth and transformation and upgrading.
He pointed out that the world today is undergoing changes unseen in a century, with the international situation becoming increasingly complex and unilateral bullying escalating. China is willing to strengthen solidarity and cooperation with Uruguay in the Global South. China always values its relations with Latin America and supports Latin American and Caribbean countries in safeguarding their own sovereignty, security, and development interests. China is willing to work with Uruguay and regional countries to promote the in-depth and substantial development of the China-Latin America community with a shared future.
Lacalle Pou said that China is an important cooperation partner for Uruguay and has provided selfless support for Uruguay's economic and social development. Developing relations with China has become a national policy of Uruguay and is unanimously supported by all parties and sectors of society. Uruguay firmly supports the One China principle and the 'One Country, Two Systems' policy. Uruguay looks forward to deepening its comprehensive strategic partnership with China and raising bilateral cooperation to a new level.
He also stated that Uruguay highly appreciates President Xi's concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind. In the face of a challenging international and regional situation, Uruguay is willing to work hand-in-hand with China, respect the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, adhere to multilateralism, maintain the international trade system, promote the continuous development of China-Latin America relations, and safeguard the common interests of the Global South.
After the talks, the two leaders jointly witnessed the signing of more than ten cooperation documents in areas such as investment promotion and trade. During the visit, both sides issued the Joint Statement between the People's Republic of China and the Eastern Republic of Uruguay on Deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between China and Uruguay.
