According to an official announcement from China, an economic crime suspect has been extradited from South Africa, involving an amount of nearly 50 million RMB (28,377,200 MYR).
On the 2nd, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security reported on its WeChat official account that, with the assistance of the Chinese Embassy in South Africa and relevant South African law enforcement agencies, Chinese police extradited a suspect surnamed Chen, accused of illegal business operations, from South Africa back to China.
This case is the first successful extradition since the "Extradition Treaty between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of South Africa" came into effect. The treaty became effective on November 17, 2004.
It is understood that the suspect, surnamed Chen, engaged in unauthorized currency exchange transactions between RMB and the South African rand for illegal profit, with the amount involved exceeding 49 million RMB (27,809,700 MYR).
In June 2020, the Chongming District People's Procuratorate in Shanghai approved the arrest of the suspect surnamed Chen for suspected illegal business activities. In July 2025, South African police apprehended Chen, after which the Chinese side submitted an extradition request; in December of the same year, a South African court ruled to extradite Chen to China.
