Wu Jing-tian, the chief of Taichung City Police Department, and Xiao Huizhu, the chief of Xinyi Precinct of Taipei City Police Department, are known as the “Divine Eagle Couple of the Police World,” but their daughter has turned out to be a scammer!
Their daughter provided an ATM card and its password to a fraud syndicate as a dummy account, resulting in three victims. Recently, the court sentenced her in late March to five months in prison for fraud and violation of the Money Laundering Control Act.
Notably, while Xiao was precinct chief of Neihu, a mother and daughter in her precinct fell victim to a scam and reported it to the police, only to be mocked by an officer with the comment “Are you still alive?” The pair later took their own lives, sparking widespread public criticism. Xiao personally apologized for the incident at the time, never expecting that, during the same period, her own daughter would become a scammer as well—an irony indeed.
The verdict details that in November the year before last, Ms. Wu, in urgent need of money, sought out a financing company for a loan. She was asked to mail her ATM card and provide the PIN. Although she found this suspicious, she complied. Shortly after sending out the card, three people fell victim to an investment scam, losing a total of over 180,000 TWD (about 22,800 MYR). By the time they reported it, the funds were already withdrawn. Upon investigation, authorities tracked the accounts to Ms. Wu, establishing her involvement in aiding the scam syndicate in committing fraud and money laundering, and prosecuted her.
During trial, Ms. Wu repeatedly claimed she was also a victim, but the judge noted that she had prior loan experience and was not new to society. Moreover, she noticed irregularities during the mailing process but knowingly ignored the risk her account could be used illegally. She was sentenced to five months in prison, commutable to a fine of 150,000 TWD (about 19,000 MYR), and may appeal.
Xiao Huizhu has admitted that both she and her husband Wu Jing-tian, as busy police officers with irregular hours, always felt they let their daughter down. In recent years, since growing up, their daughter has also been involved in cases of bodily harm and negligent injury in traffic incidents, for which she’s received detention and fines respectively.
She said their daughter is now an adult living independently, and while she made a mistake, her parents corrected her and respect the court’s ruling. Xiao added that her daughter has learned a lesson from this incident.
