Hong Kong’s heavyweight New Year movie Night King is directed by Ng Wai Lun, the director of A Guilty Conscience, who has brought together the original cast for this new production. Box office king Dayo Wong teams up with pop diva Sammi Cheng, sparking major buzz. Together with a star-studded lineup including Louise Wong, Renci Yeung, and Terrance Lau, the film has been unstoppable since its release in Hong Kong, constantly setting new box office records. In just 13 days, its box office takings surged past HK$70 million (about RM34.93 million), ranking 7th among the top 10 highest-grossing Chinese-language films in Hong Kong.
Dayo Wong expressed his delight at achieving yet another box office success: “This time, all the actors worked together in unity, promoting the film as one, so audiences could really feel the power of Night King.” In recent years, Dayo Wong’s films have achieved tremendous box office results in Hong Kong, with four of his starring works landing in the top 10 highest-grossing Chinese-language films—including the number one spot with Table for Six, as well as A Guilty Conscience, and Men on the Dragon—establishing him as Hong Kong’s box office king. And since Night King has only been in theaters for 13 days, its ranking is expected to climb even higher.
Dayo Wong revealed that it was his father who used to take him to nightclubs when he was young: “After class and dinner, my dad would take me to visit uncles at the nightclub, where they would while away time. The uncles themselves barely paid attention to the hostesses, treating them almost like furniture—the only person who would look at them was me.” He commented that nowadays, people find going to a nightclub as strange as going to Mars, “but for those uncles, going to the nightclub was just for chatting and having a drink, much like some uncles go to the park to play chess.”
