(Kuching, 6th) The Royal Malaysia Police have confirmed that the three Malaysian citizens recently arrested by local law enforcement in Hat Yai, Thailand, for carrying 87 kilograms of methamphetamine are all from Sarawak.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department Director Dato' Hu Sen Omar Han stated that police investigations revealed the three suspects were traveling by train from Bangkok to Narathiwat when they were arrested by Thai authorities.
He said that during a check at Hat Yai by the Thai railway authorities, drugs were discovered hidden inside the suspects’ luggage and backpacks, after which the three were detained.
“The Thai police and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) have provided us with preliminary information on the arrest operation.”
“We have maintained close cooperation with the Thai authorities as always. The PDRM will allow the Thais to carry out their investigation in accordance with local laws.” He stated this on Wednesday (August 5th) in an interview with Bernama's program “Waspada”.
Media reports indicated that the seized drugs, estimated to be worth RM4.3 million, were discovered during a joint operation conducted by the Hat Yai police narcotics unit, railway police, tourism police, and the 9th Division of Thailand’s Office of the Narcotics Control Board.
Preliminary investigations by Thai authorities show that the batch of meth is believed to be intended for supply to drug trafficking groups operating in Malaysia.
According to reports, the three suspects were allegedly promised a reward of RM8,000 each to assist in transporting the drugs to a designated location.
