KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here sentenced an unemployed man to 12 months in prison for threatening to kill his mother after she refused to give him money.

Mohammad Aeffyzanikhrulkhan, 42, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali to a charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

The offence took place at their home in Matang at around 12:01 am on July 3.

According to the case facts, Aeffyzanikhrulkhan – the eldest of seven siblings – lived with his 63-year-old mother and had no employment.

He was described as hot-tempered and unwilling to accept advice from his siblings or others.

The complainant relied on her late husband’s pension for her living expenses.

On the day of the incident, she was lying in bed when she heard a commotion in the living room and found her son in a fit of anger.

He then threatened her in Sarawak Malay dialect with the words “ku bunuh kau kelak” (“I will kill you”) while holding a wooden stick.

The outburst stemmed from his dissatisfaction after his mother refused to give him money.

Fearing for her safety, the mother lodged a police report, which led to his arrest at a workshop in Matang around 10:00 am the following day.

During the proceedings, deputy public prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng urged the court to impose a heavy sentence as a lesson to Aeffyzanikhrulkhan and taking into account public interest.
