The Ministry of Housing and Local Government will hold a special inspection visit in the capital next Tuesday (April 29), aiming to brief Members of Parliament on the importance of the Urban Renewal Act.
Housing Minister Nga Kor Ming pointed out that a formal invitation has been extended earlier this month to all Members of Parliament, including representatives from both the government and opposition, to participate in this inspection.
He said in a press release today: “I would like to invite all Members of Parliament, including opposition representatives, to join the department in visiting dilapidated urban areas and to inspect urban renewal projects that have been successfully implemented.”
Nga Kor Ming noted that this visit will include visiting several old housing blocks to assess their current condition and identify community issues faced by residents.
He said Members of Parliament will also have the opportunity to witness successful urban renewal projects where old apartments have been transformed into modern, comfortable, and livable residential areas.
Nga Kor Ming, who is also the Member of Parliament for Teluk Intan, said that through this initiative, the ministry aims to demonstrate the potential of the Urban Renewal Act to expedite the renovation of unsafe areas and improve the quality of life for urban residents.
“We have arranged for three buses to depart from Parliament to transport all Members of Parliament to witness the dilapidated condition of some low-cost flats that urgently need attention.”
He emphasized that the purpose of this inspection is to highlight the urgent need for the formulation of this Act.
The Urban Renewal Act, drafted since 2013, is expected to be tabled at the next parliamentary session.
The Act aims to accelerate the process of urban renewal and maintenance by lowering the consent threshold of residents and will focus on buildings that are no longer safe for habitation, in order to enhance the quality of life of the people.
