(Indonesia, 10th) The seven Singaporeans who were rescued in the Dukono volcano eruption departed for home under official arrangements on Saturday (May 9).
The special vehicle they traveled in left Tobelo, a town at the foot of Mount Dukono, at around 10:40am Eastern Indonesia Time (9:40am Malaysia time), and arrived in the port city of Sofifi on Halmahera Island at 2:45pm. They then took a chartered speedboat to the city of Ternate, where the airport is located.
It is understood that the nine Singaporeans who were trapped on the mountain during the incident knew each other. According to onsite observations, the seven Singaporeans appeared solemn as they got off the vehicle and walked quickly towards the pier, avoiding contact with the media.
Mount Dukono, located in North Halmahera, North Maluku Province, erupted on Friday morning (8th). At the time, there were 20 climbers on the mountain, including nine Singaporeans and 11 Indonesian citizens. Authorities successfully evacuated seven Singaporeans and ten Indonesians, but three climbers remain missing, including two Singaporeans.
Indonesian search and rescue authorities resumed their operations on Saturday and are still searching for the missing persons. According to the North Halmahera police, some survivors indicated that the three missing individuals have already perished.
