(Cebu, 10th) Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar, while attending the 48th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Cebu, Philippines, held bilateral talks with leaders of Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia, discussing strengthened cooperation in digital economy, artificial intelligence, energy security, combating cross-border crime, and other areas.

Anwar posted on Facebook on Friday (May 8th) that during his meeting with Thai Prime Minister Anutin, both parties agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including promoting cross-border connectivity, border development, and railway logistics network construction, with a goal to achieve a bilateral trade volume of 30 billion USD (about 38 billion SGD) by 2027.

He stated that Malaysia and Thailand agreed to accelerate the implementation of multiple cooperation plans to benefit both peoples. "We also emphasized that all disputes must be resolved in accordance with international law and through peaceful means, while maintaining ASEAN unity and ensuring regional peace and stability."

Anwar also held a bilateral meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on the same day. Both sides pledged to enhance cooperation in trade, the halal industry, and higher education, while also strengthening regional security governance, especially through closer cooperation in combating cross-border crimes and employment scams.

When meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Khai, both Malaysia and Vietnam emphasized their commitment to deepening cooperation in the digital economy and artificial intelligence sectors, while also expanding collaboration in food security, renewable energy, and more sustainable and progressive financial governance.

Anwar pointed out that Malaysia and Vietnam have established a comprehensive strategic partnership, symbolizing a high level of mutual trust and close connection. “Malaysia welcomes the signing of multiple strategic initiatives between the two sides, including a memorandum of understanding on the digital economy and the promotion of cross-border energy projects to support regional economic growth.”

He emphasized that ASEAN must continue to cooperate based on mutual trust, sustainable development, and joint progress. “As the global situation becomes increasingly complex and challenging, the strength of the region depends on whether member states are willing to jointly reinforce cooperative networks in the economy, education, science and technology, and the well-being of their people.”
