(Pontianak, 29th) Two residents from Kuching, Sarawak were recently arrested by local authorities as they attempted to smuggle two kilograms of methamphetamine into Singkawang, West Kalimantan, Indonesia.
This couple was apprehended on August 17th during an undercover operation jointly conducted by the Narcotics Unit of the West Kalimantan Provincial Police (Polda Kalbar) and Sanggau District Police.
The Director of the West Kalimantan Provincial Police Narcotics Unit, Kombespol Dedi Supriadi, stated that the arrests took place when the suspects were promoting the meth via video call to an undercover officer. The selling price they offered was 250 million Indonesian Rupiah per kilogram (equivalent to about RM64,499.75).
He said, “Investigations revealed that they exited Kuching through the National Border Checkpoint (PLBN), but it is believed they used illegal trails to smuggle the drugs across the border.”
Police intercepted their Toyota Hilux in North Singkawang, where they found two plastic bags with a durian logo containing a total of 2,070 grams of methamphetamine.
The couple confessed that they were merely acting as 'drug couriers,' for which they would receive a reward of around RM5,000 or about 18 million Indonesian Rupiah.
“Police are currently actively pursuing the mastermind behind this trafficking syndicate, and have coordinated with the Malaysian Consulate in Pontianak as well as the Royal Malaysia Police in Sarawak (PDRM Sarawak).”
The case is being investigated under Indonesia’s Narcotics Law, Articles 112(2), 114(2), and 132(1).
Dedi added, “This is one of five major cases we have successfully cracked in August, thanks to the public’s continuous provision of intelligence.”
