Netflix's latest Korean drama ‘Wish Upon a Genie’ has reportedly been leaked in its entirety! Complete episodes have appeared on multiple pirated streaming sites in China and Korea, allowing netizens to watch for free and dealing a major blow to the production team. According to Korean media, Korean film and TV content has suffered repeated piracy in recent years, with estimated copyright losses reaching as high as 5 trillion won (approx. 14.8 billion Malaysian Ringgit).
‘Wish Upon a Genie’ stars Kim Woo-bin and Suzy, with ‘The Glory’ writer Kim Eun-sook at the helm. The story revolves around the magical romance between the genie “Iblis”, who has slumbered for 983 years, and “Qi Jiaying”, who has lost her human emotions, centering on the concept of “three wishes”. The show has 13 episodes in total and was released all at once on Netflix on October 3. Each episode's production cost was as high as 2 billion won (approx. 5.94 million Malaysian Ringgit), making it one of Netflix’s marquee Korean dramas of the year.
In recent years, Netflix has implemented a “global simultaneous release” strategy to lower the risk of leaks, but it still cannot completely prevent illegal reposting. Major titles such as ‘Squid Game 3’ and Disney+’s ‘The Zone: Survival Mission’ were also illegally uploaded in a short time after their official release.
Although the government continues to intensify efforts to crack down on illegal streaming sites, piracy platforms frequently change URLs to evade investigation, making enforcement difficult. Industry insiders call for stronger international cooperation and technological safeguards to truly protect creators and ensure the long-term development of the content industry.
