Another shocking attack has shaken Mindanao Island in southern Philippines. On the morning of January 25th local time, Aguak City Mayor Ahmad narrowly escaped death when armed assailants fired an anti-tank rocket launcher at his vehicle at close range while he was returning home. The blast was powerful, but thanks to his bulletproof armored car, the mayor managed to withstand the impact and survive the attack miraculously.
Ambushed at Close Range on the Way Home at Dawn—Armored Vehicle Saves His Life
The incident occurred at around 6:30 a.m. Mayor Ahmad, after finishing prayers at a mosque, was on his way home in a black Toyota Land Cruiser. CCTV footage at an intersection showed a white van suddenly stopping at a crossroads. Two gunmen jumped out; one kept guard with an automatic rifle while the other hoisted a rocket launcher and fired directly at Ahmad's car. After a huge explosion, thick smoke engulfed the scene. Fortunately, the vehicle's extra armor absorbed much of the blast, not only preventing instant destruction and loss of life but also allowing the vehicle to move forward and escape the ambush.
Ahmad's security detail immediately returned fire, resulting in a brief exchange. Two members of the security team and a passerby were injured, while Ahmad was unharmed.
Several hours after the attack, police cornered the suspects in nearby Datu Unsay Town. After a fierce firefight, three suspects were killed on the spot. Police recovered a rocket launcher and multiple firearms at the scene. Authorities are investigating the mastermind and motive behind the attack.
Fourth Time Surviving Assassination Attempts – Nicknamed “Nine Lives” Mayor
Ahmad has survived several assassination attempts, with Filipino media comparing him to a “cat with nine lives.” A prominent member of the Ampatuan family, he severed ties with the clan after the infamous 2009 “Maguindanao Massacre” that shocked the world and left 58 dead, testifying against his relatives in court and making himself a prime target for multiple factions. In 2010, 2014, and 2019, he also survived several ambushes.
Ahmad subsequently stated that operating a rocket launcher is beyond ordinary capability, clearly indicating a professionally organized attack. He also publicly complained about the government’s withdrawal of his Department of Justice and police security arrangements at the end of last year, leaving him exposed to high risk.
