China Enters the Critical 'Late July to Early August' Flood Control Period; Water and Drought Disasters May Become Extreme

Starting from the 16th, China has officially entered the critical 'late July to early August' period for flood control, during which floods are relatively heavy in both the south and north, with the north heavier than the south. State media reports that this is the most complex and severe period for flood prevention throughout the year.

CCTV News reported that the flood season began earlier this year, and the characteristics of extreme water and drought disasters are prominent. Since the start of the flood season, China has experienced 19 heavy rainfall events, 2 more than the average for the same period in previous years; typhoons landed early and had a wide impact, and the risk of frequent or repeated floods in small and medium rivers is high.

At the same time, the flow rates of major rivers are overall about 20% lower than the average for the same period in previous years, showing a pattern of "less in the south, more in the north." Currently, drought-affected areas are mainly distributed in Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Hubei, and other regions.

The Ministry of Water Resources predicts that during this 'late July to early August' period, regional and periodic droughts and floods in China will be significant. Floods in both the south and north will be heavy, with the north heavier than the south, while droughts will be more severe in central and northwestern regions. There may be 2 to 3 typhoons making landfall. Localized extreme rainstorms and floods may occur frequently, and regions such as the middle and lower Yangtze River, the Yangtze-Huaihe area, and the central and northern parts of Xinjiang may experience periodic droughts.
