Qin Lan Develops Lasting Effects from Crying in ‘Story of Yanxi Palace’; Undergoes Vocal Cord Surgery, Voice Becomes ‘Even More Hoarse’

Chinese actress Qin Lan has recently become the center of attention due to changes in her voice. Since 2023, because of vocal cord problems, her voice has become distinctively unique and hoarse, drawing unexpected discussion on variety shows. She initially thought the problem would improve over time, but three years have passed and her voice has not fully recovered. Recently, after undergoing surgery on her vocal cords, her voice became even deeper and hoarser. She joked that she now sounds like a 'wolf grandma', sparking lively discussion among netizens.

Qin Lan’s vocal problems can be traced back to 2019, during the filming of ‘Story of Yanxi Palace’. The heavy load of crying scenes over a prolonged period caused her to develop pharyngitis, which laid the foundation for future complications. In 2020, while filming ‘Legacy’, she was diagnosed with one side of her vocal cords being unable to fully close. Even after resting, her condition continued to fluctuate. By 2023, while filming ‘Dance City’ in a plateau region, high-altitude reactions caused her pharyngitis to recur, worsening her vocal cord closure deficiency. This made her already hoarse voice even more obviously electronic-sounding, and after her appearance on the variety show ‘Divas Hit the Road’, she was nicknamed ‘Electronic Dora’ by netizens—her voice signature, unexpectedly.

At the start of 2024, Qin Lan’s voice briefly improved, but a cold in March caused it to relapse. Another filming stint at high altitude in 2025 made her vocal problems resurface. Although between June and November of the same year fans noted her voice seemed noticeably clearer, by year’s end at public events, the hoarse tone was still very evident. Medical analysis indicates Qin Lan’s condition belongs to neurogenic vocal cord closure dysfunction, which requires a long recovery and is easily affected by environmental and physical factors.

In order to record the fourth season of the variety show ‘Dear Inn’, Qin Lan decided to undergo vocal cord repair surgery in hopes of improving her voice. However, the outcome was unexpected; instead of becoming clearer, her voice became even deeper and hoarser. On the show, she joked: ‘I used to be a cartoon with an electronic voice, and now I feel like a wolf grandma.’ She even laughed that the doctor was ‘a bit too diligent,’ resulting in the gap between the actual and expected outcomes.
