A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the southern waters of Mexico on the morning of the 17th local time.
The Mexican Navy Tsunami Warning Center once issued a tsunami warning, but later, based on monitoring results, confirmed that there would be no significant change in sea level, and the tsunami warning was canceled.
The Mexican National Seismological Service stated that a 7.4-magnitude earthquake occurred that morning in the waters 135 kilometers southwest of Hidalgo City, Chiapas State, southern Mexico, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake has triggered 80 aftershocks, with the largest aftershock measuring 6.5 in magnitude.
The Mexican National Civil Protection Coordination stated that tremors were felt in Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, and Oaxaca. No casualties or major property losses have been reported so far in the affected areas.
In addition to Mexico, residents in Guatemala and El Salvador also felt strong tremors.
