(Manila, 5th) The crew of the Philippine's newest missile frigate, BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG-06), conducted onboard system familiarization and training drills on Wednesday (June 5) in the waters off Zambales.
Philippine Fleet spokesperson, Commander Randy Galbo, said in an interview on Thursday that the crew mainly collaborated with the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to familiarize and master the ship's various operational and combat systems during this exercise.
"This training primarily focused on the OEM's operational training and familiarization process," Galbo stated.
After the drill, the ship returned to its naval operations base in Subic, Zambales.
Galbo pointed out that after the higher authorities assess that the crew has fully mastered the operation of all systems, the ship will be officially deployed.
The BRP Miguel Malvar was commissioned on May 20, 2024, and is the first Philippine warship equipped with a Vertical Launch System (VLS), capable of intercepting aerial threats with advanced missile capabilities. It is also the most advanced and powerful warship currently in the Philippine Navy.
The ship has a displacement of 3,200 tons, a total length of 118.4 meters, a width of 14.9 meters, and a range of 4,500 nautical miles. It cruises at a speed of 15 knots with a top speed of 25 knots. The vessel is equipped with various sensors, reconnaissance, and combat systems to monitor and engage surface, subsurface, and airborne targets.
Its main weapon systems include an Oto Melara main gun, a 35mm Aselsan Close-In Weapon System (CIWS), four .50 caliber heavy machine guns, eight C-Star anti-ship missile launchers, two triple-tube Blue Shark anti-submarine torpedo launchers, and a 16-cell VLS for air defense operations.
Additionally, the BRP Miguel Malvar also participated in the seventh round of the Philippines-U.S. Maritime Joint Cooperation Exercise, held on the same day near the coast of Zambales. In this exercise, the U.S. Navy's P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and the Philippine Coast Guard's BRP Cabra (MRRV-4409) patrol ship also participated.
