(Miri, 9th) Organized by SCO Productions, the large-scale classical music educational event "2025 Sarawak Classical Odyssey" will make its grand debut in Miri on August 23rd (Saturday). The event warmly invites people from all walks of life to participate and witness the occasion together.
Centered on the philosophy of "Education Over Competition," the event encompasses a piano masterclass, music educators' seminar, and a joint piano and vocal recital. It aims to promote the classical music ecosystem in East Malaysia and build a professional exchange platform for music learners and educators.
The piano masterclass will be held at 8:30am at Pei Min Middle School Hall in Miri. Renowned Malaysian piano educator and Dean of UCSI University’s Institute of Music, Professor Dr. P’ng Tean Hwa, will conduct the session, providing each participant with a 45-minute one-on-one coaching and inviting live observation.
The Music Educators' Seminar, tailored for music teachers, will take place at 3:00pm at Blue Cottage Coffee. The seminar focuses on teaching methods, classroom practices, and future trends in education, fostering thought-provoking discussions and professional growth.
The Joint Piano & Vocal Recital is scheduled for 7:30pm at Pei Min Middle School Hall. Pianist Cheryl Jong Yun Xin and soprano Lim Xin Jie will collaborate, blending the artistry of piano and vocals for a rare classical performance in East Malaysia.
This year’s event adopts the theme of “Education Over Competition,” emphasizing a return to the original intent of learning amid today’s highly competitive environment. It advocates for dialogue over rivalry and aspires to make music a touching and inspiring artistic experience.
The organizers hope the activities will allow students in East Malaysia to access professional musicians for in-depth guidance, foster a musical education community, encourage experience sharing and collaboration among teachers, and break through resource and geographical limitations, injecting Sarawak with greater artistic vitality and diversity.
SCO Productions, founded in 2025 by local pianist Cheryl Jong Yun Xin, is a classical music education platform dedicated to establishing a vibrant and sustainable classical music ecosystem in Sarawak. Through performances, masterclasses, and community educational programs, the team provides learning and growth opportunities for young musicians in East Malaysia and enhances musical and cultural exchanges between East and West Malaysia.
Cheryl Jong Yun Xin expressed that while she knows she cannot change the entire environment alone, everything can begin with a small event. This event is more than just a musical gathering; it is a heartfelt gift to her hometown and a hope to sow the first seed of classical music in Sarawak.
