U.S. President Trump on the 12th warned the Iranian soccer team that if they participate in the 2026 World Cup to be held in North America, their lives and safety will be at risk.
He posted on his social media platform "Truth Social" saying: "The Iranian national football team is welcome to participate in the World Cup, but I truly believe that, for their own lives and safety, it may not be appropriate for them to appear there."
Just two days ago, Trump had told FIFA President Gianni Infantino that despite ongoing conflict in the Middle East, he still welcomed Iranian players to participate.
The 2026 World Cup will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Ongoing conflict in the Middle East has raised uncertainty regarding Iran's participation in the tournament.
This week, Trump also commented on the matter of the Iranian women's soccer team competing in Australia, calling on the Australian government to grant them political asylum. Because the players refused to sing the national anthem before the Asian Cup matches, they fear reprisals upon returning to their country. In response, the Australian government later granted asylum to the 5 players who decided to stay.
