KUCHING: The feasibility study on the construction of the new Kuching International Airport at Tanjung Embang is set to be completed by early 2026 at the latest.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the special committee overseeing the airport project is still in its planning stage, with the appointed consultant currently conducting the feasibility assessment.

“We are still in the planning stage. The consultant has been appointed, and the feasibility study is ongoing.

“Hopefully, it can be completed by the end of this year or early 2026,” he told reporters when asked about the status of the project after officiating at the launching ceremony of the refinement and enhancement of free school transport services workshop here today.

He said the committee involves all relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Transport Malaysia, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).

“All these agencies have their representatives in the committee,” he added.

A recent news report said Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is still waiting for the outcome of discussions between the Sarawak and federal governments on the proposed new international airport in Kuching.

MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani was quoted as saying that no final decision has been made as talks are still ongoing between both parties.

“We are aware that the state government is planning to build an airport. However, the discussion between (the) state and federal (government) is ongoing,” he said during a media briefing on MAHB’s strategic direction following its privatisation.

The proposed airport, which would be located in Tanjung Embang, is envisioned as a state-of-the-art facility inspired by Doha’s Hamad International Airport.

The plan was first announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who said the project is needed to support Sarawak’s economic growth and expanding tourism sector.
