At around 8 p.m. on December 1st, a fight broke out at Ningxia Night Market in Taipei. A man saw a family of three tourists from Malaysia taking photos of a car's license plate and, mistakenly thinking they were whistleblowers trying to report him, approached them for a confrontation which escalated into a street fight. Officers from the Jiànchéng Police Station in the Datong Precinct arrived on the scene, where it was explained that the tourists were photographing the plate because it was exactly the same as a friend’s car plate back in Malaysia, and they thought it was a fun coincidence to share with their friend.

According to ETtoday News Cloud, police investigations revealed that a 65-year-old Malaysian man surnamed Zhang brought his 33-year-old daughter and 49-year-old son-in-law surnamed Yan to Taiwan for a trip. On their first day, they visited the famous Ningxia Night Market in Datong District, Taipei City, and noticed a car parked on Ningxia Road with a license plate identical to Zhang’s Malaysian friend's car. Finding it amusing, Zhang decided to take a photo to send to his friend, but was stopped by the 28-year-old car owner, surnamed Wu.

At the time, Wu had illegally parked his car in a red-lined area and, thinking Zhang was trying to report him, confronted him, leading to a heated argument that escalated into a physical altercation. In the end, Zhang and his two companions ganged up on Wu, who also fought back. All four ended up with minor injuries.

When the police arrived, they found all involved parties fighting, with scratch marks on their hands. Wu and Yan suffered more serious injuries, both having bruising around the eyes. The police immediately took all four back to the station for questioning. Although neither side pressed charges, they were still referred to prosecutors for disrupting public order. This conflict left Zhang and his family with an unpleasant experience on their very first day in Taiwan.
