Six-planet alignment, total solar eclipse, and Perseid meteor shower peak will all occur on August 12th, forming a rare "cosmic trio." The news has sparked heated discussions, with some netizens likening the scene to the start of a disaster movie, even linking it to doomsday, zombie plagues, and religious prophecies.
The first to appear is the planetary parade, commonly known as the "six-planet alignment." Before dawn on August 12th, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Uranus, Saturn, and Neptune will, from Earth’s perspective, be distributed in the same expanse of sky, forming an arc across the horizon.
Only Total Solar Eclipse of 2026
After the six-planet parade, that afternoon, the Moon will move to a position between the Sun and Earth, with its shadow sweeping across Earth to create the only total solar eclipse of 2026.
According to NASA information, the path of totality will begin near northern Russia, cross the Arctic region, Greenland, Iceland, and the North Atlantic, then enter northern Spain, with a small part of Portugal also lying in the path of totality; the longest duration of totality will be about 2 minutes and 18 seconds. NASA's eclipse path map shows that most of Europe, parts of North America, and northwest Africa will only see a partial solar eclipse of varying degrees.
Most of Asia will not be in the range where this solar or partial eclipse is visible and will miss witnessing the event.
After sunset, the Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak from the night of August 12th to the early morning of the following day.
Netizens Hype “Doomsday Warning”
According to foreign media such as the UK's Daily Mail, with these three celestial phenomena occurring in succession on the same day, some overseas netizens have described them as the universe's "triple anomaly," immediately triggering various doomsday conspiracy theories.
Some people associate these celestial phenomena with ancient omens, claiming that ancient civilizations might have interpreted solar eclipses, planetary alignments, and meteor showers as warnings of war, crop failure, or divine wrath, often adding, “Good luck to everyone!”
Astronomers: Each Phenomenon Has Its Own Cause
However, astronomers emphasize that the three astronomical events each have different causes, and their occurrence on the same day is purely a matter of timing and coincidence, with no scientific evidence indicating impending disaster.
From a scientific perspective, a solar eclipse is formed when the Sun, Moon, and Earth reach a specific relative position; the Perseid meteor shower is a periodic phenomenon caused by Earth annually passing through a stream of comet debris; the so-called planetary parade is just several planets simultaneously appearing on the same side of the sky from Earth’s viewpoint.
There is no common cause, nor does any mysterious force exist that could trigger earthquakes, wars, pandemics, or other disasters. The so-called “six-planet alignment” does not even mean the planets are clustered together, and any additional gravitational effect on Earth is negligible.
