The China Coast Guard issued a bulletin and released photos stating it had successfully rescued 13 Filipino crew members from a capsized cargo ship near Scarborough Shoal, with search and rescue operations still ongoing.
According to the China Coast Guard’s WeChat account, at 1:34 a.m. on the 23rd, the China Coast Guard received a report from the Maritime Search and Rescue Center of Sansha City, Hainan Province, that a foreign cargo ship had capsized 55 nautical miles (about 101 kilometers) northwest of Scarborough Shoal, a region with disputed sovereignty claims between China and the Philippines. There were a total of 21 Filipino crew members on board.
After the incident, the China Coast Guard immediately dispatched two vessels to the area to carry out search and rescue operations. As of 10:52 a.m. on Friday, 13 people had been rescued, and related rescue work is still ongoing.
