KUCHING,18 July: A senior couple living in Batu Kawa here has received much-needed assistance from Hope Place Kuching after a devastating accident left the husband severely injured and dependent on care.

The couple, Sim Wei Sin, 75, and his wife, Lau Ju Ngo, 74, were recently visited by the non-governmental organization (NGO) following a referral by a concerned social worker at Sarawak General Hospital.

The visit brought not only emotional support but also essential supplies and medical aid.

According to Hope Place, the couple’s only daughter, who lives abroad with her foreign husband and their children, is unemployed and can only send them a small amount of money occasionally.

Their situation worsened significantly in May when Sim suffered a terrible fall while attempting to fix a leaking kitchen ceiling, causing him to suffer a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), fractured pelvis, and broken legs.

A neighbour found Sim bleeding heavily and called an ambulance, but help took 30 minutes to arrive as he drifted in and out of consciousness.

Although nearly two months have passed, Sim is still on the path to recovery.

He has only recently begun to walk again with difficulty.

His wife, who is a stroke survivor, now shoulders the responsibility of assisting him with daily tasks.

Additionally, Sim suffers from epilepsy, a condition that began in 2023, further complicating his health needs.

The cost of medical treatments and transportation has placed a heavy financial burden on the couple.

As Sim is unable to move independently, his wife often has to rely on neighbours or kind individuals to help carry him into a taxi for hospital visits.

Despite these challenges, the couple is thankful to receive government welfare aid, and Hope Place is also doing its part, having supplied adult diapers and a brand-new wheelchair to Sim.

Members of the public who wish to help can contact Hope Place Kuching at 082 505 987 or 013 567 2775.

Interested donors can make donations to Hope Place’s Maybank account (5112 8900 1160) or via the Sarawak Pay / S PAY GLOBAL QR code, which is available on the NGO’s Facebook page.

Receipts will be provided upon request.
